Get the best of both worlds.Miles & Monk at Newportpresents each jazz master as heard at the Newport Jazz Festival in the years 1958 and 1963.On side one,Miles Davis’sextet comprised ofCannonball Adderley, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, andJimmy Cobbsteams through a hot set of bebop. On the flipside, theThelonious Monkquartet comprised ofCharlie Rouse, Butch Warren, andFrankie Dunlopstretch out on a pair of compositions.
Of special note is an appearance byPee Wee Russellduring theMonkperformances as well as the fact that this album, in addition to Jazz at the Plaza, is the only non-bootlegged recording of a live Davis combo earlier than the famed 1960At the Blackhawkalbum. And yes, this is theDavissextet that madeKind of Blue.
Restored to mono, the record sounds incredible.Mastering engineerMark Wildercomments: I originally assumed that this album was going to need the most work to capture the original mono sound. After all, the Davis cuts were recorded in 1958, Monks in 1963, and both were recorded outdoors.Surprisingly, though, the master tapes were exactly like the original LP pressing and needed no fine-tuning.
