Grant Greenranked alongside Wes Montgomery as the most exciting new jazz guitarist of the early 1960s. Green recorded a couple of dozen very memorable albums forBlue Notein styles ranging from modal jazz to soul jazz, bop, funk, Latin and spirituals. 1961’sGrant’s First Standwas recorded soon after the prolific guitarist was discovered by Lou Donaldson and brought to the Blue Note roster with great acclaim. He’s heard here in a stripped-down trio with just Hammond fromBaby Face Willetteand drums fromBen Dixon. The set is raw and soulful and very much in the vein of what Donaldson was bringing to the label at a time.
