Actor

Description

St. VincentActoron LP + MP3

Actoris the highly anticipated new album bySt. Vincent(neeAnnie Clark), and the follow-up to her first albumMarry Me, one of the most acclaimed debuts of 2007.Actorwas co-produced byClarkandJohn Congleton(Modest Mouse, Polyphonic Spree) and features eleven new songs, all written and arranged byClark.

The new album takes the ambitious compositional and sonic underpinnings ofClarks debut as a starting point and never looks back. Arrangements are more masterful, the songwriting grander, the performances ever more confident and inspired.Clarksings and plays guitar, bass and keys onActor, with woodwind contributions fromHideaki Aomori(Sufjan Stevens) andAlex Sopp(Bjork, Phillip Glass), and additional rhythm section work byMcKenzie SmithandPaul AlexanderofMidlake. Other contributing musicians on the album includeMike Atkinson(French horn, score consultant),Daniel Hart(violin, sarongi),William Flynn(bass), and percussionistsJeff Ryan, Matthias Bossi, andAynsley Powell.

“Clarks subtle albeit commanding guitar playing matches the seemingly delicate temperament of her voice; both characteristics give way to discordant bursts of violence that belie the moody tension that lies underneath many of the songs. Ranging in scope from orchestral pop to indie-rock hymnals, Actor is a breakout statement from the most exciting frontwoman to emerge since PJ Harvey.”-Bob Gendron, TONE Audio, 2009’s Best Records, Issue 25
